Water from a Website Auction

It’s with great pleasure (and not a little trepidation) that I’m finally able to announce the Train-ee “Water from a Website” auction.  My hope is that by the end of the event on May 9th, a church will get the ExpressionEngine-based website built during the Building a Church Website tutorial series and we will have raised enough money to fully fund a fresh water well through charity:water.

I say “we” because I need your help.

To see a short video I put together, learn more about the project and the different ways you can help head over to the Water from a Website section.

Mike,

Just wanted to let you know that you do an incredible job for the EE community and for that I thank you very much.

Your water video is great. Those statistics are breathtaking! I hope my donation helps you to get to your goal and I encourage everyone who’s benefitted from Mike’s contributions to the community to donate a little. I know you’ve all got PayPal accounts with a few dollars sitting in them!!

Thanks again for everything!

Mike,

Thanks for the great tutorials.  My head is still spinning from the “Building a Small Business” tutorial, but I think I am getting the hang of it.

I also clicked through to the charity:water website and went with the e-card donation option (since Mother’s Day is just around the bend).

I plan on saving up to eventually voyage out to one of your classes.  In the meantime I do plan on picking up the “On Demand Training” titles.  Any future videos we should be looking out for?

I know this isn’t a competition by any means (and of course this is my personal opinion) but so far I have found your free tutorials more informative and easier to follow than Murphy’s title “Building Websites With Expression Engine 1.6”.  (Hint - Get that book deal - you deserve it.)

Thanks again for the free tutorials.  Would be lost without them.

Joe

Hey Joe -

Thanks for the Comment and for supporting charity:water.

I’m elbows-deep in the slides and script for another screencast - hoping to have it published end of next week.

And yes - I’ll announce the topic when it’s ready..;)

Thanks for the comment on the book.  While I’ve never published a book through a publisher I have in the past had articles published in some national magazines (Access Advisor way back when…)

Overall I really prefer the self-published route.  I keep more control over the product and quite frankly - make more money on the sales.

Most publishers do little promotion for their books - that’s all still left to the author, so the only value that the publisher brings to the table is the editorial process and design/layout help.

For the church series I plan to outsource both of those steps as an effort to getting more polished final product.  I’ll also get an ISBN number so the book can be sold through Amazon, etc.

I was in a hurry to get the Small Business book out because I didn’t think it had much of a shelf life..;)
